Day 12: Is Oktoberfest all about the Bier?

Actually no.  Oktoberfest is a surprisingly family friendly event.  There is the food, from fish on a stick to ox on a spit.  There is an entire tent dedicated to desserts, another for wine and champagne (in Germany, it's called Sekt), and a tent with archery competitions.  And there are rides, more rides, even more rides, and games.

As much as Munich's Oktoberfest is a worldwide phenomenon, a surprisingly large number of its annual visitors are locals.  From Bavaria come 72% of the Wiesn's visitors.  That's about one-third of the state's population of 13 million Bavarians.  They come for the Bier, of course, but also for the Food, Musik, and Fun.

If you can't make it to Munich this year, come visit the Bavarian Bierhaus in Opry Mills for much of the same experience (minus the fish on a stick).

Prost!
